ABOUT AUSTRALIA

Australia is a truly unique travel destination with limitless attractions. From its red hot center to the lush coastline, Australia offers something for everyone, especially sports enthusiasts.

In an effort to put the magic of Australia into words, here is some information about four of the country's most popular destinations.

Sydney
Sydney lays claim to being one of the most beautiful cities in the world, as was showcased to the world at the 2000 Olympic Games. Its population is approximately 4.2 million, and it's Australia's oldest and largest settlement. The many attractions include the historic Rocks area, the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, heavenly beaches, beautiful national parks and a laid-back lifestyle.

Canberra
Canberra, named after a local Aboriginal word meaning “meeting place”, is the national capital city and center of government in Australia. Unlike most of Australia, Canberra was totally planned with examples of the best modern architecture in Australia and over 12 million trees. It is home to Australia’s Parliament House and the Australian Institute of Sport, as well as numerous art galleries and museums.

Cairns
Cairns is the capital of the far north and is firmly established as one of Australia's top travel destinations. Most visitors to Australia spend some time in Cairns before heading north to the superb rainforests of Daintree or east to the islands and the Great Barrier Reef. It is a center for a whole host of activities, not only reef trips and scuba diving, but also white-water rafting, canoeing, horse riding, bungee jumping and skydiving.

Melbourne
Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city with a metro population of 3.8 million. One of the most charming modes of transportation in the nation’s cultural capital is the tram, which rattles past cafés, theatres and galleries. Melburnians are mad about sport. The ‘Melbourne Cup’ is a public holiday and Australian Rules Football is like a religion. The city also supports two NBL teams — the Melbourne Tigers and the South Dragons.
